Before Your Love

A Sonnet for My Sweetheart
Before Your Love

Before your love, hope bubbled in my soul,
Fragile as an eggshell, ever piercing,
Fear and longing paid an erstwhile toll,
A lonely bird caught in a cage, I’d sing.

Every broken road I’d travel lightly,
Loving those who only judged me, hurt me,
Those who’d break my spirit, tell me tritely,
That love with chains and shackles set me free.

You came and fixed the house of my heart’s ache,
You filled its halls with song and love once more,
Just when I thought the limits of my heart break
Had overfilled and nothing was in store.

And you arrived, a patient loving mind,
And I could finally leave my past behind.
